Politics is an unfortunate affair of the heart
Romantic or political heartbreak. They’re not so different. Each starts off suffused with hope and expectation, followed by anxiety and equal levels of uncertainty and optimism, culminating with “Where did it all go wrong?” and finger pointing and self-reflection and bourbon.
Unless it works out; or you win. But most of us have experience with a relationship that doesn’t last; and most of us have felt the sting of political disappointment — most likely at the hands of the archaic and infernal first past the post system, with its tendency to take our vote out back to show it the business end of an unrepresentative approach to electoral democracy.
Our approach to politics — like our approach to romantic relationships — is an affair of the heart. And like its starry-eyed, amorous equivalent, this approach is rooted deep in our ancient biology…
